F**king Swines

And I'm not the only person capable of producing blue language today. Here's a story for you all to learn from.

At the end of last week a website of mine got hacked; one that I'd spent 3+ years building up and not to mention G's craftsmanship.

Since my life would make an excellent black comedy of tragedy, almost simultaneously I was confronted with some other issues, that needed attention - think, it never rains but pours - I did not have the head space to even deal with maverick code.

Fast forward to today where I mailed my host, and asked for a backup of the database. The bad news: the backed up copy was overwritten this morning. In other words, the backed up version was the hacked one, and no other version exists.

With it came the quick realisation that 3 years of work just disappeared, into some hacker's black hole. Right on cue, I couldn't do anything but cry. Universe collapses, etc. Perfect Woody Allen material.

G and J and came online, both served very different purposes but they rescued what little was left of my sanity. That I really needed, and forever grateful for a support network which increasingly becomes more difficult as you get older. I'm burnt out on crap, and just wishing life and its tribulations would just stay right away. Since that's not going to happen, to at least give me a break for a while because believe me, I need it.

Bottom line, there was a hole in the code - not mine, since I'm not that clever - and the database got screwed. Don't hackers really have anything better to do? With hacking skills like that, you could be earning lots and any spare time you have just keep the hell away from a computer. There is really no need to exercise your C++ ego. In the meantime, lesson learnt, including employing a better contingency plan. Now, to take a deep breath and restart ...

Sigh. *hugs*

How many weeks does your ISP retain backups? Sounds a bit slack if only a week or two..

Did you check out google cache's of your site and www.archive.org - may be able to recover some data from there?

I agree with your sentiments.. *hugs*

My host holds one back up, and this happens to be yesterday morning. Ironically, when I had another plan (paid less), I had more back ups.

Always assumed that back ups were consistent (had an issue a while back, and needed to get my host to roll back something ... I was given more than one option). This is the contingency plan I had relied on. Seems not, and found out a bit late. Lesson for all geeks there.

G is going to look at the messed up database tonight. In the meantime, if anyone has a cure for my current lack of sanity, please dish it on a plate.
