Go Out and Vote!
A post mashed together in a short time, I'm supposed to be finishing netting some peas (get my gardening, yesterday I planted over a thousand carrots).
Anyway, I put this link on Facebook plus Twitter this morning, but its important enough to put here too. Get the hell out the door and vote in aid of the Euro elections, BNP is the last thing we need. You can also sign a letter. And as I type this post, I just got a link to this page.
Yes I know everyone is sick to the back teeth of politicans, the whole expenses scandal and the rest. Which is probably why many people won't turn up at the polls, and leaving the far right wing loonies have their say. Not to speak up, is reckless. If BNP gains seats today, it would kind of be ironic. Even Obama is showing some decent leadership, reminding us that the US is perhaps a decent place after all, by reaching and encouraging a more tolerant path. Do you want the UK to be end up more right wing, intolerant and nuts than say, the US under Bush? Look where that got us and remind yourself exactly what you thought of the US at that time (in the gutter somewhere, right?) Exactly what did we fight WW2 for, where many people lost their lives for a greater ideal?
If you want a very short read, of how friendship shifts, because society endorses intolerance I really recommend reading Address Unknown.
As for MPs this expenses fiasco, its been going on for decades, you just got exposed to it via transparency. Ask yourself what you really are objecting to, when you say you won't vote on the grounds of objection / the behaviour of MPs. I don't think anyone objects to democracy - are your really up for dictatorship? - so what you throwing your vote away for? What do you really want? I have my bets its around minimum government with greater transparency (balances and checks), if your anger around expenses is anything to go by. Which is not quite the same as shunning a democratic process.
I'll probably vote Green or Plaid. Last European elections, I think the Green Party had my vote. On the subject of green issues, watched this video last night good as a reminder of the urgency of sustainability (the population explosion scares me, people really need to stop breeding like rabbits, one of the root causes of climate change). If you care about digital rights this is useful (which has me swinging towards Plaid).
And I will finish off with tale about a cousin who visited this afternoon. She wrote to our local MP, to tell him that she worked (as a nurse) thirty miles away. Could she please have some money for a second home. She also explained that she had three cats, and they would very much like a house built for them, could he please ask parliament to donate. I should also add, my cousin turned up in her pyjamas by way of town, because it was her day off and she couldn't be bothered to get dressed. My family adores the whackier the better.
In the meantime, I'm off finish sorting out those peas, then off to the polling station.
