Now I can't remember if I've already ordered this certificate from GRO. Another case for making comprehensive notes here! Unfortunately they don't have a certificate pending system, on your account page, for me to be able to check; neither do they send out an order confirmation e mail (apart from payment details). Poor website services! I will just have to wait until the last two certificates I ordered arrive, before I can go any further. The GRO is currently operating at snail speed. Hurry up!

I am paricularly interested in this certificate, as I would like to find Gwen's date and place of birth, as currently I have no clues for tracking her down on the census. There's far too many Gwen Pugh's out there!

Richard Bryan's death

Richard Bryan's death

This Richard Bryan drives me nuts. One thing I definately know about him, he's a bit of a nomad. He never stays in one place, and is living somwhere totally different each census. To add to it, he is even a lodger for the 1881 census, with his wife and kids living elsewhere. He comes from Worcester, so it appears, and family had me believe by now I'd be somewhere in rural Ireland. His name seems to change from: Brian, Bryon and Bryan. I can't quite pinpoint his year of birth either, and it seems to differ between 1819 and 1820. Maybe there's two of them, which is all I need!

I'm now trying to pinpoint the index reference for his death. I'm assuming he died between 1881 and 1891 (from the census), and his death took place in Shropshire.

This is what Free BMD came up with for that time:

Deaths Sep 1882 Bryan Richard 44 Shiffnal 5a 375 Deaths Jun 1885 Bryan Richard 0 W. Bromwich 6b 472

Deaths Sep 1887 Bryan Richard 72 Wolverhampton 6b 306

Deaths Sep 1890 Bryan Richard 56 Bridgnorth 6a 331

Deaths Mar 1891 Bryan Richard 87 Shifnal 6a 480

There's too many Richard Bryans, and secondly none of them fit his age! The census in 1881 has him at 62. Therefore he must have died between the ages of 62 and 72.

If I expand a search for Richard Bryan nationally, the only ones I can come up with that are within the age range are:

Deaths Jun 1883 Bryan Richard 66 W. Derby 8b 373

Deaths Mar 1890 BRYAN Richard 69 Stratford 6d 477

The W.Derby one is too old, and the Stratford one is a possibility but I think its a year out? In any case, what would he be doing there? In 1881 he was a lodger in Shifnal whilst his family were living in Chetton. His family had moved back to Bridgnorth by 1891, but still in Shropshire giving him no reason to move out of county, unless of course he fell out with all of them, and/or he was determined further release those nomad tendancies!

I realise that Free BMD is not fully transcribed, but other indications show that deaths for Shropshire for that period is?

Does anyone know where I should go from here? Is there any clues as to the above.

Richard Bryan's christening?

Richard Bryan's christening?

Evelyn e mailed me this, found on FamilySearch, and wondered if it was the christening of my great great grandfather:

Richard BRIAN, chr 9 May 1819 in St. John Bedwardine WOR, father Thomas BRIAN, mother Sarah

I wonder? The year is about right, however the name is spelt differently.

Richard Bryan still alive in 1881!

Richard Bryan still alive in 1881!

I've finally had it confirmed that family historians are detectives, or at least they need to be one in their next life! Just as I assumed that Richard Bryan is dead in 1881, I got an e mail this morning stating he was alive:

'The clue was in the entry for Sarah and family at Woodland Lodge, Chetton, Shropshire. It stated she was married, rather than widowed'.

Bryan: Stoke Prior images

From a posting on the ENG-Worcester list, I was directed to someone's personal website, Parishmouse, which shows pictures of some Stoke Prior buildings, but more interesting for me, St Micheal's Church, Stoke Prior.

This church has some Bryan connection, and it was where my great grandfather - Walter T. Bryan - and his brother was christened.

I love websites such as these, as immediately on finding out a location connection with my family, I'm itching to know what it looked like. It helps fill in the gap, until you get the opportunity to visit the place.

Appreciation to Rootsweb users

Appreciation to Rootsweb users

I'm totally stoked about the positive responses I've got from people subscribed to Rootsweb mailing lists. Its a real community over there, and uses all the advantages of the net. Usually mailing lists can venture into personal attacks, tail chasing, and drift in its purpose. Rootsweb is different, and the generosity of the people behind the names is overwhelming. These people give up their time to assist a random stranger, and have a genuine interest in what they are on the list for.

Being in such an environment, even for a relatively short amount of time, forces the desire: I've got to give something back to this. In this sense, it can be described as a true sense of community, whereby goodwill seems to be the operative bottom line, and it has to entice the most cynical into the desire to give something back.

I've operated in various communities prior to this, and whilst I've usually given (to the point of burning out) the operative word has also been frustration. Why people around be can be indifferent. As a secondary benefit of joining Rootsweb, I hope that I can learn how communities operate in a wider sphere, and take away some understanding how such an application can be applied elsewhere. However, textbook doesn't come into this, this community seems to have just happened.

However, its not the theory I'm there for. Apart from my primary motive being my own research interests I'm really appreciating the community experience. I have gathered so much information this year, and I can see the trail I've left behind me, not analysing each bit of information, which in time I need to go back to. I've jumped from list to list, eager to go back just a bit further with my family. I fear that I've not stopped still in one place long enough, to be a bit more participatory, but to be honest I feel a complete newbie and unqualified.

I just wanted to say thanks so much to everyone who has taken time to assist me: it matters, and its appreicated. I'm kinda overwhelmed right now. I just hope in time I will find a way of making a contribution back.

Bryan research, linking Chetton

Bryan research, linking Chetton

Whilst searching for Woodlands Lodge, Chetton to find out more information on where the Bryan family lived in 1881, the only return I got was from a cached webpage. Amazingly this site links my family.

I've subsequently lifed the information off this webpage, who appears to be researching the same Bryan line as me. Well at least they have my ancestors amongst their information, and how they are related to everyone else, I'm not sure.

I really would like to contact them, but it appears that the site is no longer in use and it is cached GeneaSeek (although I cannot find this page on there), and I came across it by a further cache on Google here.

I've pasted the information below, in case its lost from cyberspace. However, if its your page, please could you get in touch.

**FILLES DU ROI**

The filles du roi, or King's Daughters, were some 770 women who arrived in the colony of New France (Canada) between 1663 and 1673, under the financial sponsorship of King Louis XIV of France. Most were single French women and many were orphans. Their transportation to Canada and settlement in the colony were paid for by the King. Some were given a royal gift of a dowry of 50 livres for their marriage to one of the many unmarried male colonists in Canada. These gifts are reflected in some of the marriage contracts entered into by the filles du roi at the time of their first marriages.

The filles du roi were part of King Louis XIV's program to promote the settlement of his colony in Canada. Some 737 of these women married and the resultant population explosion gave rise to the success of the colony. Most of the millions of people of French Canadian descent today, both in Quebec and the rest of Canada and the USA (and beyond!), are descendants of one or more of these courageous women of the 17th century.

HAD 16 CHILDREN, ONE OF WHICH WAS ALEXIS BISSONNETT.

Born around 1775 (?) in Co. Cavan, Ireland and immigrated to the US in the late 1700's to early 1800's and settled near Hiddenite, NC early 1800's(?). I think that my g-g-g-Grandfather ROBERT CAVIN may have entered the US through PA (Bucks Co.) before settling in NC, but I have no proof of this.

Family tradition has it that Andrew was dodging the draft from Poland. He joined his younger brother, Joseph in America. Both were boarding with his wife's family in 1910.

[NI6181] [FTWEXPRT2.GED]

It appears from the 1910 census that Mary (as she came to be known later in life) came to America alone to join her father? She either met her husband on the job, and he and his brother moved into the household, or vice versa, the 2 men boarded at the house and he joined her at her job.

[NI6188] [FTWEXPRT2.GED]

This man's family has different dates for immigration for each family member. It is possible that they came over one or 2 at a time. Until this entry was found in the 1910 census, family tradition had it that the oldest daughter came over alone. This entry shows that the whole family came over.

[NI6189] [FTWEXPRT2.GED]

The 1910 census lists this woman as having had 6 children, and that the 3 not listed were dead. Most likely the other 3 were born in Poland and died there.

Henry Adams came to Mount Wollaston (later Braintree), Massachusetts, from Charleton Mackey, England, in 1636. A book says he left Somersetshire , England with his wife and 9 children before 1640 (which agrees with 1636). A second book says Somerset County, England. Family legend is that he was related to President John Adams, making his descendents "directly descended" from the President. Further checking via a book describing the life of John Adams the president makes him the Great-Grandfather of president John Adams.

Xeroxes of this document and the Will of Louis Churchbaugh that follows were in an old family Bible of William Otto Boehle and Bessie Marie Churchbaugh. No one knows who first researched and typed it up. A few of the dates of the children do not agree with dates written into the Bible by hand. The following document is about 2/3 of a typewritten page, single spaced. The will which follows is about 1/2 of a typewritten page, single spaced. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Louis Churchbaugh was born in Stuttgart County Stuttgart, Kingdom of Wurtember, Germany September 28, 1833. He was left an orphan at an early age and was raised to the age of 21 in Deitzensau, County of Esslinger. On his 21st birthday he started to America that he might miss the three years of military training.

Mary (Magdalina) Huttenlachen was born at Deilzisau County, Esslinger, Kingdom of Wurtemberg, Germany on November 29, 1836. She started to America on the same boat on which Louis Churchbaugh was sailing. The trip taking 49 days on account of adverse winds, the sail boat was taken back even farther from America than it was the day before. Many on the ship died of cholera before the journey was over. They reached America on September 29, 1854 and although on the same boat, they did not meet until after landing. They journeyed on to Dayton, Ohio, became acquainted and were married March 20, 1859. They resided in Dayton until 1865 when with other imigrants they travelled farther West, finally locating on a farm near Pleasant Grove, Kansas and there remained the balance of their lives.

They became the parents of the following children: David born April 23, 1860 and died April 23, 1860 Samuel born July 30, 1865, died in November, 1941 William born July 27, 1864, who died Oct. 20, 1935; Abraham born May 4, 1867 who died July 1895 John born November 22, 1869 who died 11/20/48 Moses born July 4, 1872 and died August 16, 1874. Levi and Lewis, twins born August 7, 1874. Levi died August 18, 1874, Lewis died May 19, 1952. Mary born January 1, 1877 died July 10, 1947 (Mary Ulrich) LaVina born February 2, 1881 and now residing in Iola, Kansas (LaVina Wood) died 6/3/78

Both Louis and Mary Churchbaugh joined the German Baptist church at an early age and remained faithful members until their death. Mary Churchbaugh died June 12, 1903 at the age of 66 years, 6 months, 14 days and her husband died December 27, 1910 at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 29 days. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE WILL OF LOUIS CHURCHBAUGH

July 9th, 1903 Dated at Lawrence, Kansas. This is my last will and testament from the above date. Know all men by these presence that I, Louis Churchbaugh of lawful age and of sound mind, do hereby will and bequeath all of my property, both real estate and personal property as follows, namely: To Samuel Churchbaugh I give $200. in as much as the farm I had given him was not as valuable as the farms I had given my other children, after the $200. is given to Samuel Churchbaugh, my next bequest is that out of my estate my executors pay to the Old German Baptist Church of Willow Springs, Kansas the church I love so well the sum of $100. to be expended by the church in sending the Gospel to members who live at a distance from the Church, through ministers who are not able to meet their own expenses. The residue of my estate after the above amounts are taken out, I will to my children, Samuel Churchbaugh, William Churchbaugh, John Churchbaugh, Louis M. Churchbaugh, Junior, Mary Churchbaugh (now Mary Ulrich) Lavina Churchbaugh and Sarah Ethel Churchbaugh, the daughter of Abraham Churchbaugh, deceased. It is my will and desire and I hereby stipulate that any administrators or executors hold the share of Sarah Ethel Churchbaugh until she is twenty one years old and pay her part of my estate to her at that time, but if Sarah Ethel Curhchbaugh should marry before she reaches 21 years of age, and should die leaving children it is my will that her share of my estate go to her children, but however if Sarah Ethel Churchbaugh should die leaving no children it is my will that her share of my estate revert back and be divided equally among my children. I hereby name as my executors, Samuel Churchbaugh and William Churchbaugh without bond. Louis Churchbaugh. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 1910 census, this individual was found living in the same household as Andrew Sliwa, and was 4 years younger. Further, this Andrew is definitely the one that is in the family tree. It is reasonable that 2 brothers came to America together, especially if the original family rumor is true. Rumor has it that Andrew and therefore, Joseph came over to America to avoid the draft in Poland.

[NI6461] [FTWEXPRT2.GED]

The 1910 census lists this woman as having had 4 more children. They are listed as dead in 1910. The dates would seem to indicate that several of them were lost in Poland before the family moved to the US.

[NI7026] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He was a soldier in the French and Indian War, and was twice taken captive and carried to Canada, but was exchanged and returned. In his captivities he said he fared as well with the Indians as with the French. He lived in Suffield, Ct. with his wife Susannah until, with his brother Joel, he settled in Marlboro, Vt. in 1782 or 3. He bought out William Mather. He may have purchased a farm from Joseph Pease of Suffield. There is a tradition that Susanna drove British officers out of her house during the Revolution.

According to the History of Marlborough, 1930, the first framed building in town was built on Capt. Simeon's farm ( a barn ). It was later owned by son T. Mather Adams and eventually torn down in 1821.

[NI7029] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He removed to Suffield, Ct., probably 1681-2, where he was one of the wealthiest and most prominent of the early settlers. He was a member of the General Court of the colony, then held in Boston, 1711-14, and again in 1717. He died in Boston suddenly, while in attendance upon his duties as member of the Gen. Court from Suffield. He acquired a large property and was greatly esteemed. His will, dated 11-20-1717, is recorded both in Boston and at Northampton, the county seat of Hampshire Co., to which Suffield then belonged.

[NI7038] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He was believed to have come from Devonshire, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Sharlon of Sharland(connected with the Ap Adam pedigree, Welsh). The Ap Adam pedigree began with Ap Adam in the time of Edward the First about the close of the 13th century, changing the name to Adams in the 8th generation. He was believed to be a cousin of Henry of Braintree. He came to Ipswich, Mass. in 1635 with his wife and two children, John and Joanna. He was a tailor in Ipswich and then in Salem where he lived from 1638-9. He then removed to Newbury, Mass. about 1640, where he acquired a large farm and other valuable property.

[NI7042] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He was a corporal in the militia 1685-93. He became a sergeant 1703.

[NI7046] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He purchased a farm in Boxford in 1716.

[NI7050] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He settled in Boxford, Mass. in 1738. He was commissioned as Capt. of the 2nd Co. of militia of Boxford 9-1-1762. He was selectman fourteen and representative in the General Court for four years(1778,1783-5). He held mortgages on land adjoining the Jaffrey common, and in 1785, bought from his son Samuel, the Thorndike store and Danforth tavern lots and other land in Jaffrey. Several of his sons, Isaac, David, Thomas, Samuel, and Daniel came to Rindge, N.H., about 1772. Isaac was killed in the battle of Bunker Hill, and his gun and bayonet were preserved by Thomas A. Adams of Gorham, N.H. Samuel and David came to Jaffrey.

He was said to have died on his farm, according to "Robert Adams Hx".

[NI7053] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He settled in Rindge in 1772 and enlisted in the war 4-23-1775. He was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. His gun and bayonet are preserved by Thomas A. Adams of Gorham, N.H.

[NI7054] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He settled in Rindge in 1772-3. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and then a captain in the militia. He served as constable in 1786.

[NI7055] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He was a private soldier from Boxford, enlisting on 4-19-1775 under Capt. John Cushing, Col. Samuel Johnson's Reg. He served for 5 days.

[NI7056] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He removed with his father to Rindge in 1772-3 and then to Jaffrey in 1778. He served as a soldier in Capt. Brown's Co. 1777,was stationed at Ticonderoga. He became a capt. in the militia. He built the first meeting house in Jaffrey.

[NI7057] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He came to Rindge, from which place he served in the Revolution, enlisted on 4-19-1775 and served for 4 days. He was a member of Capt. Salmon Stone's Co., under Gen. John Stark, in 1777. In 1780 he was a lieutenant in Col. Nichols' regt., raised for the defence of West Point. In real estate deeds he was denominated "Gentleman," and the record of many mortgages of Jaffrey real estate are an evidence of his means and standing. The History of Rindge is in error in stating that he died unmarried about 1800. He came to Jaffrey in 1797 and paid his first poll tax and a tax on live stock the following year. He lived in Jaffrey Center until 1805, when he moved to Keene, N.H., where he died. In the settlement of his estate, 40 acres of land in Jaffrey were advertised in 1814.

[NI7061] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

Moved to Upper Canada, now Ontario.

[NI7062] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He moved to Gilead, Maine. His wife Deborah and an infant drowned in the Androscoggin River in 1803.

[NI7109] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He was called "Benoni" in early life. He became a cordwainer in Andover. He was a soldier in the French & Indian War. He removed and settled in Rindge, N.H. about 1772. This account is disputed.

Another account claims he is actually the son of Abraham Olney Adams and Hannah LaGrasse, the daughter of Donald LaGrasse of Drumlanrig, Scotland. He was born in Quincy, MA in 1706, removed to Keene, N.H., Andover and Littleton, MA, finally to Rindge, N.H. where he died 10-16-1789 at age 83. He married (1) 1726, Mercy Holdridge of Stonington, CT. They had a son Stephen who was born 6-6-1727. (2) 3-2-1733, Tabitha Farnum (3) Polly White of Providence, R.I. Abraham was born near Charlestown, MA 1-11-1680, the son of Stephen Olney Adams who was born in Tenterden, Kent Co., Eng. 4-18-1620. Stephen married (1) in Maidstone, Eng. 5-1-1645 Lydia Hartwell. She died in Maidstone in 1650. (2) 1678 Priscilla Durrie who died in 1718 at age 98. Their son was Abraham Olney Adams. Stephen Olney Adams was an officer in Cromwell's army, wounded at the battle of Worcester 9-3-1651. Fleeing to America to save his life he settled near Charlestown, MA.

[NI7110] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He bought land in the Rowley Canada township, to which he moved in 1750, but, receiving notice from Benjamin Bellows, later of Walpole, N.H., that he had title to the same property from the later proprietors, Adams relinquished his claim and season's work and returned to Andover. Twenty years later, accompanied by his aged father, he returned and bought land near Grassy Pond in Rindge, still known as the Israel Adams place. Tradition has related that the family were two weeks in making the journey from Andover, and that the last part of the way they had to cut their way through unbroken forest. As there were roads in that section as early as 1772, this story probably applied to the 1750 migration. He was a prominent citizen of Rindge.

[NI7113] [FTWEXPRT3.GED]

He succeeded to the ownership of the farm in Rindge, that had been occupied by his father and grandfather. He was a well-to-do farmer in a section now practically abandoned.

In early life he peddled tin and woodenware, an occupation in which many New England wizards of finance are said to have "cut their eye teeth." By his operations in lumber and real estate, and by close management, he acquired a comfortable fortune. He was for a few years a storekeeper in Squantum Village, but later removed to East Jaffrey and lived for the rest of his life on the place facing the Baptist Common, owned in 1931 by the Estate of Mrs. Edward C. Boynton. He was a director of Monadnock National Bank.

Idris Williams: Canadian Immigration

Idris Williams: Canadian Immigration

Regina-01.jpgMy grandfather sailed to Canada when he was 19 years old, and he stayed there for 4.5 years, working his way across the country working on farms. He always had tales about Canada.

Canadian immigration is available online and there is a database for Passenger Lists from 1925 - 1935.

Grampa's entry on the database is:

The above information can be found online here.

I am now trying to get a copy of the passenger list.

Postive response from Glamorgan-L

Postive response from Glamorgan-L

Last night I posted an e mail to the Glamorgan-L enquiring whether anyone had done research into the Wilde's. This morning I had some positive replies in my inbox!

Firstly, I've had a contact for someone else who has been researching the Wildes in the same area, so I plan on following that up. Secondly, I've had some really useful information in relation to the 1851 and 1871 censuses. This takes me back a further generation, and also fills in the name of Elizabeth Wilde's grandfather. Census information to follow in the next posts. Subsequently, I've updated who I'm researching, for the Wilde family, which can be found here. I just need to get my head around place names, as its a new territory to what I'm used to.

I plan on joining the Glamorgan FHS this week, as I can see the benefits of membership plus I would like to support.

Additionally, a comment has been left on this blog (as a result of posting to that list) suggesting some MySQL enabled software, which I think I'm going to go with. An example can be seen here, and its not the first page because that is a MT blog. That's why it looks like a blog! (That last comment was aimed at a certain friend).

arms.gifThis information relates to the Bryan clan in Ireland. "The counts de Brienne of Brienne-le-Chateau were one of the more distinguised families of medieval France, producing statesmen, diplomats and crusaders. In the twelfth century Sir Guy de Brian IV, first of the lineage identified by name in English records settled in South Wales. The first Irish Bryans came late to Ireland and established themselves in Kilkenny."

It is unclear from the above as to whether the Irish Bryans came from France via Wales, or France direct.

The Clan Sept of the Knight de Bryan Contacts

About the Clan

Matrilineally descended from the Plantagenets, it is also noteworthy that, through the operation of the Highland Celtic customary law of matrilinear descent barring marriage of a daughter into another Scottish clan, a practice retraceable to Pictish origin, the Sept of the Knight de Bryan has retained its historic status as a Siol Ailpein sept of the Gaelic Royal House of Dal Riada.

Among the distinctions of this international family of Irish origin is their appointment by dynastic firman as The Noble Corporation of the Knights de Bryan, Honour guard of the Imperial House of Sellassie. The Imperial House of Sellassie of the Solomonic Dynasty, now in its 228th generation, is the oldest continuously existing dynastic family.

Arms: 'saracen's head erased, sable': Sir Francis Bryan, d. 1550, Lord Marshall of Ireland appointed by Henry VIII, served as chief intelligence officer for the Tudor Court. Delegated to the Holy See as representative of Henry VIII in the suit for annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Sir Francis Bryan was dubbed by John Milton 'the Vicar of Hell' from the strength of his persuasive deliberations with Pope Clement VII, the 'Vicar of Christ'. 'Sir Ralphe Fane, Sir Francis Bryan, and Sir Ralphe Sadler were created bannerets by the Lord Protector Somerset after the battle of Pinkie in 1547, and the better opinion is that this was the last occasion on which the dignity was conferred' ( Encyclopaedia Britannica, 'Knighthood,' vol 13, p 432.) The family crest alludes to the colorful career of the patriarch from which the sept descends.

Crest: A Saracen head erased at the neck sable, surmounted by the Solomonic Lion of Judah or, upon two swords crossed or..

Motto: "Fortis et Fidels" (Strong and Faithful)

Variations: De Brienne, de Bryene, de Bryen, de Brian, de Bryan, Brian, Bryan, Bryant.

The counts de Brienne of Brienne-le-Chateau were one of the more distinguised families of medieval France, producing statesmen, diplomats and crusaders. In the twelfth century Sir Guy de Brian IV, first of the lineage identified by name in English records settled in South Wales. The first Irish Bryans came late to Ireland and established themselves in Kilkenny. On December, 31, 1369, Sir guy de Bryan V was elected 50th Knight of the Order of the Garter. Sir Francis Bryan, worthy scion of this distinguished family, who had been knighted by Henry VII in 1497, served Henry VIII as a close advisor. In the year 1548 he married Joan, only child of James Fitzgerald, 10th Earl of Desmond, and was made Lord Marshall of Ireland.

Their grandson, Colonel William Smith Bryan, with his family of eleven sons, was exiled by Oliver Cromwell to the Virginia Colony before the year 1653. It is from these eleven sons that many American Bryans is in North America with only a very few till resident in Ireland. Families closely affiliated with the Bryans in American history are the Hintons of Colonila North Carolina, the Boones, descending from Daniel Boon and Missouri. Early American families historically associated with the descendants of Major Benjamin Franklin Bryant, founder of Bryant Station, the Republic of Texas, include the McKays, the Blankenships and the Ezzells.

Bryan: a contact plus a Laugharne Castle connection?

Bryan: a contact plus a Laugharne Castle connection?

Now I'm curious. I had an e mail as a result of this blog, which possibly might put me in contact with a second cousin. As I type this, I am waiting to find out more information.

Family tales have always said that the Bryans descent from Ireland, via Bridgnorth. I have Bridgnorth verified, but Ireland not.

Last night I was discussing with my dad how to track down the family bible and gain sight of, which is believed to be in the possession of a second cousin. It is understood that earlier generations of Bryan in the bible, identified themselves as Brian with a prefix before the name.

laugharne_castle340.jpgI've now been directed to a link between the Laugharne Castle and de Brian, with speculation that there is a link between Bryan and the de Brian of Laugharne Castle.

Laugharne Castle is on a low cliff, by the side of the Coran stream the mouth of the River Taf and served as a coastal fortress. The castle was once owned by the writer Richard Hughes. Dylan Thomas often stayed with Hughes and used the gazebo in the grounds when writing. The castle is now in the care of CADW.

Snippets around the de Brian's relationship with the castle is as follows:

From the mid 13th century until the end of the 14th century the castle belonged to the de Brian family. The de Brians, all with the same name of Guy, rebuilt the castle in stone, eventually creating a strong fortification that offered a high standard of accommodation. At the time the de Brians acquired the castle the area was still under threat from the Welsh, and in 1257, Guy de Brian IV was captured and only released the following year after a ransom had been paid. The building work that Guy de Brian IV had started was continued by his son and completed by the most successful member of the family, Guy de Brian VII. Guy VII was a distinguished soldier who fought at the battle of Cr?, rose to the position of Admiral of the Fleet and was made a Knight of the Garter in 1370. When he died in 1340 there was no clear successor and the castle declined during a long period of disputes over the inheritance, which was not settled until 1488 when Laugharne passed to Henry Percy, fourth Earl of Northumberland. Source.

laugharne castle air.JPG The first mention of a castle proper was made during 1116, and it is known that Henry II met with Lord Rhys at Laugharne in the latter half of the 12th century. Following the King's death in 1189, the castle was captured, and damaged by fire. In 1215, overthrown by the Welsh once again, Laugharne Castle was burnt to the ground. Some thirty years later, now owned by the de Brian family, a programme of rebuilding and strengthening commenced, and it is the work of the late 13th century and 14th century that remains today. Source

Established in the early 12th century as an earthwork castle, Laugharne was rebuilt in stone by the Anglo-Norman de Brian family during the later 13th and early 14th centuries. It was converted into a Tudor mansion by Sir John Perrot in the later 16th century. Source.

More history on Laugharne Castle can be found here.

Now I'm left wondering with regard to my roots, and I'm not sure if I can go back fast enough.

Thoughts: this census shows them living at the Kings Arms in 1891, and one assumes this is a pub by its name? The census does not indicate anyone living there was a publican, and John is the head of the household? It also seems strange that John is living at a pub (assuming it was one) given his moral stance shown by this report. Was the root of contention a result of he was a competitor in business? If so, why is he listed as a butcher not a landlord? Did he live in the Kings Arms and sold no alcohol due to his moral stance?

Liv Cab Proprietor - what is it? I'm not sure if I've transcribed this properly, check out image. Via family word of mouth, the family were blacksmiths and were reputated to have the finest horses and carriages in the area. Was there such a thing as a horse and carriage taxi, and is this what the occupation means?

Elizabeth Ashton nee Owens: Obituary

Elizabeth Ashton nee Owens: Obituary

Obituary for my great grandmother, taken from a family photocopy. There is no date on the photocopy.

OBITUARY

MRS. E ASHTON, CLATTER

The death occured during Saturday night, with tragic suddenness, of Mrs. Elizabeth Ashton, wife of Mr. John Ashton, Clatter Terrace, Pontdolgoch, Clatter. The sad news of which cast quite a gloom over the whole district, where the family is well known and held in high esteem. Mrs. Ashton, who was 69 years of age, previously suffered occasional cardiac attacks during recent years, but medical skill and attention had always brought her round and enabled her to carry out her usual household duties. On Saturday night she retired to bed at her usual hour and in excellent spirits, but shortly after midnight she was seized with a sudden illness, and expired in her husband's arms before medical aid could be summoned. The deceased lady was always of a particularly cheerful and kindly disposition, and was much beloved by all with whom she came in contact. She was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church, for which she had always been an ardent worker. It is sad to relate that Mr. and Mrs. Ashton were to have celebrated their golden wedding on May 27th next, and to which they and their family were looking forward with much pleasure, as also were their many friends and neighbours. The suddenness of Mrs. Ashton's death came as a great sock to the whole neighbourhood, and much sympathy is extended to the sorrowing husband and family by whom she is survived.

The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Wednesday, the place of interment being Shiloh Methodist Church burial ground.

The services at the house and at the church were conducted by the Rev. D. T. Rees (Caersws), assisted by the Rev. David Davies (Carno), and in their brief address both ministers testified to the good qualities of Mrs. Ashton as a wife and mother. At the conclusion of the service in the church the organist (Miss Roberts, Graig) played the "Dead March in Saul" and the committal rites at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. D. T. Rees.

The mourning relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. John Ashton (husband); Mr. and Mrs. John Ashton (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. Richard Ashton (son); Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Davis, Bryncoch (son-in-law and daughter); Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ashton (son and daughter-in-law); Mrs. M. E. Thomas (daughter); Mr. Idwal Ashton and Mr Douglas Ashton (sons); Miss Maglona Ashton and Miss Lily Ashton (daughters); Masters Walford, Wynn and Lewis Ashton, Masters John and Allan Davies, Master Tom Thomas, Masters Bernard, Donald and John Ashton, Miss Ruth Ashton, Misses Hannah and Nesta Davies, and Miss Eirlys Thomas (grandchildren); Mrs. Richards, Trawsfynydd (sister); and several nephews and nieces.

The bearers were Mr. J. T. Jones, Penlan, Mr. Richard Jones, Llanfaes, Mr. William Corfield, Carno(? - looks like Cartn_?) and Mr. Lewis Hamer, Caersws Station. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. D. Lewis and Son, Newtown, and the undertaker was Mr. Edward Owen, Pontdolgoch.

Floral tributes received were inscribed as follows:-

Mewn Hiraeth Dwys Oddiwrth y Teulu Cartref ai Teulu back Ty-Capel; With fondest remembrance of dear Mother, from Johnnie, Bessie and Walford, Llysywen, Carno; Mewn Hiraeth Mawr Oddiwrth Polly ai Teulu, Refail, Llanbrynmair; In ever-loving memory from, Martin, Sarah and the little boys; With deepest sympathy, from Rhiewgriafol and dear friend and neighbour, from Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Jones, Penlan; In deepest sympathy, from Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths, Nantoer, Newtown; with deepest sympathy, from Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hamer, Station House, Caersws; With love and sympathy, from all at Neuadd Newydd; With deepest sympathy from all at Station House, Pontdolgoch; In loving memory of Mrs. Ashton, from Matron and the Nursing Staff at Caersws Institution.

Own notes: Caersws Institution - this is where my grandmother - Maglona Ashton - worked as a nurse. My grandmother was born in 1907, and was married and living in Llanidloes by 1940. So one assumes that this obituary was between 1925 - 1939.

Theophilus: Murderers, sheep rustlers, vestry brawlers & libel

Theophilus: Murderers, sheep rustlers, vestry brawlers & libel

I was pointed to the following, as a result of e mailing Dyfed-L.

This is taken from Additional Information on Persons Buried at Llanbadarn Church.

Note: John Theophilus and Magdalene Theophilus (nee Evans) are my great great grandparents. Margaret (one of their children) is my great grandmother.

John Theophilus was a butcher with premises at Aberystwyth where he lived, at Princess St, with his wife, Magdalene, and six children, Mary Jane, Sarah, John, David, Morgan, and Margaret in the early 1870?s though he appears to have moved to Llanbadarn Fawr by 1890.

Magdalene was the daughter of John Evans of Blaencarrog and was living near Myrthyr Tydfil when she married John Theophilus in 1860. According to the terms of her father?s will she was to inherit one-third of his estate, amounting to ?60 on her marriage but for some reason she did not receive her share of the inheritance in full from her sister after her father?s death in 1863 and, despite sueing her sister she never got her full share.

Her husband, John, was also involved in several court cases and in 1871 came close to a prison sentence. He was involved with one John Morgan who was accused of stealing four sheep and selling them to John Theophilus for ?2.15s.10d (?2.79) as a result of which Morgan was transported for seven years. The Chairman in passing sentence on Morgan was very critical of John Theophilus and intimated that he had narrowly avoided being sent to prison.

Magdalene Theophilus was the aunt of Mary Davies, a quiet 38 year old member of Soar Methodist Chapel in Borth who was suffocated in her bed with a pillow by her brother-in-law, Thomas Richards. He was hung in November 1894 in Carmarthen.

Morgan Theophilus was a horse dealer who was mentioned in the Cambrian News in April 1894. It seems that his father, John, had sued Evan Jenkins, the landlord of the Black Lion at Llanbadarn, for ?50 as compensation for a black eye he had received during a vestry meeting when he claimed he was assaulted; he was awarded ?4 with costs.

After the case John Theophilus wrote to ?Baner ac Amserau Cymru? alleging that the Black Lion supplied drinks to drunkards even early in the morning and on Sundays; apparently John Theophilus and his three sons had taken to standing around the Black Lion on Sundays to prove their point but Evan Jenkins sued for libel and was awarded ?75 damages against ?Baner?.

The above has been taken from Ceredigwynd. More information on families in Llanbadarn Fawr and its history is here.

Own notes: The family seemed to have moved to Llanbadarn by 1874, see Margaret Ann's birth certificate and subsequent censuses.

"The famous Welsh newspaper Y Faner (Baner ac Amserau Cymru, ?The Banner and Times of Wales?) is no more, but a new publication called Y Faner Newydd (?The New Baner?) now exists." Taken from here.

1859: "BANER AC AMSERAU CYMRU" FOUNDED "The Banner and Times of Wales", also known as "Y Faner", came out of a joining of the weeklies "Yr Amserau" and "Baner Cymru". The paper has had a profound impact on the religious, political and literary life of Wales, especially during the latter half of the last century. In 1977, the format of the newspaper became that of a magazine -- one of the two national weekly journals in the Welsh language (the other is "Y Cymro"). Source.

I was directed to the Cardiganshire Marriages 1813-1837 on the Camathernshire Family History Society webpage. Its a PDF document, which can be found in the Cardiganshire Anthrology page.

I can't place the document on this webpage, due to their copyright terms, but I've made my own notes for Theophilus marriages. This is an excel document.

Reacquainting oneself with research

Reacquainting oneself with research

I started to research my family history back in 1990, and things were very different then. The internet was a concept that I'd not heard of, and information collated was mainly via older familiy members and collecting information off known gravestones. Many of these family members have since died, so I was lucky to have this grounding. However, my research quickly fell to the wayside, more pressing matters such as university.

At the end of 2004, I googled my grandmother's name - Maglona Ashton - just out of curiousity. Apart from being slightly bored, I tried to come up with a name that I didn't think Google might have indexed. However, to my amazement I was directed to this post on Powys-L. Tony in this post identified my grandmother, born in 1907 which immediately made me curious to the details on her birth certificate.

Subsequently, I contacted Tony in White Rock, and things snowballed from there. Mainly in my renewed interest in family research and how much research as become slightly easier than it was 14 years ago: at least the global network is easier. I've still yet to make a connection with Tony's tree though. His Maglona Ashton is a different one, but we seem to have the same area for earlier generations.

I put what I knew about my family tree onto GenesReunited and as I had a contact from a second cousin, I was forced to pay my annual membership to reply! We've been fortunate to exchange information, and I've been able to fill in further missing bits, plus having someone else interested in the same lineage as you helps and further fuels the addiction.

Now I worry I'm getting rather addicted and everything else will fall to the wayside. To date I have 348 members in my tree, more about each family in subsequent posts ...

Changing this into a family history blog

Changing this into a family history blog

I've decided I want to use this blog to make notes for myself as I progress my family history research. Those coming here, please ignore posts earlier than this point, as I was intending to shape this blog into something entirely different. I will transfer these earlier archives elsewhere at some point. I've been tempted to use my personal blog to make such notes, but I'd bore more friends even more than I already do.

These notes are primarily for my own benefit, as I find it easier to organise myself electronically than on paper. Risks of hard drives being inaccessible, and remote access points towards the benefits outweighing the risks as far as maintaining a blog is concerned.

I will probably set up some webpages (possibly in wiki format) at some point, to organise information, supplementing this blog. This blog is intended to be genealogy notes as I progress.

Also, as I have been researching I've really appreciated the benefit of information online and secondly, wished that there was more information freely available. Where there has been assistance from community lists, such as those on RootsWeb, I have received invaluable assistance which I am extremely grateful for. As a great supporter of open source information in other spheres, to this end there may be a small handful of people who would be interested in dipping into this blog when researching their own family trees, either through trying to make possible links and/or just observing the process I go through to gain information.

At this stage it is appropriate for me to make it clear that I am very new to genealogy, therefore please don't arrive at this blog looking for 'expert' information, as I'm the last person to give it! Its very much a learning process for me, and no doubt I will make stupid mistakes along the way, hit many brick walls and generally be frustrated. I also don't know how long I will be able to sustain this: my current mood is addiction, but other things might just get in the way stopping me from updating this blog often.

Well, I won't know unless I give it a stab ...
