- [S73] Hugh's notes, Hugh (Reliability: 2).
I now move to my other grandmother Mary Elizabeth Ashton, before she married John Bebb Davies.
Her mother and father were Elizabeth Owens and John Ashton, who were married at the Register Office, Machynlleth on the 27 May 1887. She gives her home at the time as Windsor House, Pentrerhedyn Street, Machynlleth. In census returns as being born in Dolgelley.
John Ashton is a general labourer, and his residence is Tynddol, Llanbrynmair although his family were living at the Terrace in Clatter, where we find them in the 1891 census with John and Elizabeth living next door.
In the 1871 census we find Thomas and Mary Ashton, together with their son John aged 9 at Clatter.
In 1861 they were at Rhiwrefel - he was a railway labourer. Living with them was a Richard Newel, a stepson to Thomas Ashton. In the Llanwnog church register I found the marriage of Thomas Ashton and Mary Newell on the 14 May 1859. He was aged 37, a bachleor of Brynderwen whose father was a manufacturer.
Mary Newell was a widow, aged 38 of Clatter, whose father was John Hughes. Mary was baptised at Llanwnog on 14 January 1821, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Hughes of Llwydcoed.
On the 18 May 1853, the register records the burial of Thomas Newell of Fawnog Fach aged 28. This was surely Mary’s first husband.

OBITUARY
MRS. E ASHTON, CLATTER
The death occured during Saturday night, with tragic suddenness, of Mrs. Elizabeth Ashton, wife of Mr. John Ashton, Clatter Terrace, Pontdolgoch, Clatter. The sad news of which cast quite a gloom over the whole district, where the family is well known and held in high esteem. Mrs. Ashton, who was 69 years of age, previously suffered occasional cardiac attacks during recent years, but medical skill and attention had always brought her round and enabled her to carry out her usual household duties. On Saturday night she retired to bed at her usual hour and in excellent spirits, but shortly after midnight she was seized with a sudden illness, and expired in her husband’s arms before medical aid could be summoned. The deceased lady was always of a particularly cheerful and kindly disposition, and was much beloved by all with whom she came in contact. She was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church, for which she had always been an ardent worker. It is sad to relate that Mr. and Mrs. Ashton were to have celebrated their golden wedding on May 27th next, and to which they and their family were looking forward with much pleasure, as also were their many friends and neighbours. The suddenness of Mrs. Ashton’s death came as a great sock to the whole neighbourhood, and much sympathy is extended to the sorrowing husband and family by whom she is survived.
The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Wednesday, the place of interment being Shiloh Methodist Church burial ground.
The services at the house and at the church were conducted by the Rev. D. T. Rees (Caersws), assisted by the Rev. David Davies (Carno), and in their brief address both ministers testified to the good qualities of Mrs. Ashton as a wife and mother. At the conclusion of the service in the church the organist (Miss Roberts, Graig) played the “Dead March in Saul” and the committal rites at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. D. T. Rees.
The mourning relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. John Ashton (husband); Mr. and Mrs. John Ashton (son and daughter-in-law); Mr. Richard Ashton (son); Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Davis, Bryncoch (son-in-law and daughter); Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ashton (son and daughter-in-law); Mrs. M. E. Thomas (daughter); Mr. Idwal Ashton and Mr Douglas Ashton (sons); Miss Maglona Ashton and Miss Lily Ashton (daughters); Masters Walford, Wynn and Lewis Ashton, Masters John and Allan Davies, Master Tom Thomas, Masters Bernard, Donald and John Ashton, Miss Ruth Ashton, Misses Hannah and Nesta Davies, and Miss Eirlys Thomas (grandchildren); Mrs. Richards, Trawsfynydd (sister); and several nephews and nieces.
The bearers were Mr. J. T. Jones, Penlan, Mr. Richard Jones, Llanfaes, Mr. William Corfield, Carno(? - looks like Cartn_?) and Mr. Lewis Hamer, Caersws Station. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. D. Lewis and Son, Newtown, and the undertaker was Mr. Edward Owen, Pontdolgoch.
Floral tributes received were inscribed as follows:-
Mewn Hiraeth Dwys Oddiwrth y Teulu Cartref ai Teulu back Ty-Capel; With fondest remembrance of dear Mother, from Johnnie, Bessie and Walford, Llysywen, Carno; Mewn Hiraeth Mawr Oddiwrth Polly ai Teulu, Refail, Llanbrynmair; In ever-loving memory from, Martin, Sarah and the little boys; With deepest sympathy, from Rhiewgriafol and dear friend and neighbour, from Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Jones, Penlan; In deepest sympathy, from Mr. and Mrs. Griffiths, Nantoer, Newtown; with deepest sympathy, from Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hamer, Station House, Caersws; With love and sympathy, from all at Neuadd Newydd; With deepest sympathy from all at Station House, Pontdolgoch; In loving memory of Mrs. Ashton, from Matron and the Nursing Staff at Caersws Institution.
Obituary photocopy undated.
Caersws Institution - this is where my grandmother - Maglona Ashton - worked as a nurse. My grandmother was born in 1907, and was married and living in Llanidloes by 1940. So one assumes that this obituary was between 1925 - 1939.
Note some family relationships are misleading.
