I think the Matthew Williams in this household is my great great grandfather. However, there is another Matthew WILLIAMS on the 1851 census, which will be included in another entry should I have got the wrong person. From later censuses, he is born c1830, making him around 21 years for the 1851 census.

FATAL ACCIDENT AT VAN MINES
A MINDER CRUSHED TO DEATH UNDERGROUND
On Thursday afternoon, at about half-past three o'clock, a distressing accident occurred at the above mines, which resulted in the instant death of one of the miners named Matthew Williams, who lived at Nantyderw, near Trefeglwys. Deceased was a man of about sixty years of age, and leaves behind him a wife and grown-up family. He was an experienced miner, and had worked at the mine for a number of years. On Thursday afternoon he had entered the mine as usual for the evening stem, and had reached a stope on the 135 fathom level where he was employed. The other men working in that part of the mine, but at some distance from the deceased, heard at about half-past three o'clock a heavy fall of stuff in the stope where deceased was at work, followed by something like a groan. Guessing that something was wrong the ran to the stope, where they discovered that a heavy fall of rock and eath had taken place. The deceased man was not to be seen at first, but after removing some of the stuff he was discovered face downwards lying on the ground, with blood issuing from his mouth and nose. A huge rock some tons in weight, had, it appeared, suddenly burst upon him from one side of the stope and hurled him to the ground and against a projecting rock on the opposite side, with the inevitable result that the poor fellow was caught between the two and instantly crushed to death. His head and arms as well as his legs were free, but his chest was held in the death grip between the fatal rocks, and was fearfully crushed. The fall of rock appears to have been very sudden, as the deceased only had time to give one shout or groan before the terrible weight was upon him. This was the noise heard by the other workmen immediately after they heard the fall. From the position in which deceased was discovered, it appeared as if he had made an effort to escape from his dreadful doom, but unfortunately he did not succeed in clearing the treacherous rock in time. The body was got out of the mine at about five o'clock, after which it was conveyed to deceased's home the same evening in a conveyance, to await the inquest. Deceased was a man much liked and respected by his fellow workmen, and his end is much regretted by all who knew him.
