- [S156] Oral History: James/Mary by Llewellyn Jones, 1963, Llewellyn Jones, 1963, (Llewellyn Jones, 1963) (Reliability: 2).
"James worked in and around Oak Hill, Ohio at various jobs including deputy sheriff work. About 1883, the family moved to Garden Plains, Kansas. He worked as a carpenter in Wichita during the "boom". In the fall of 1899 the family moved (in two covered wagons) to a farm five miles southeast of what is now Vici, OK. It was Oklahoma Territory then and was just emerging then from ranches into farms. Many squabbles were had between the "free rangers" and the "homesteaders". James J. and daughter, Katie filed on adjoining land (160 acres and 120 acres respectively) to make one good sized farm. They proved it up in five years and then received ownership. The family lived the first winter in a half dugout tent. The folowing year James built a two-room frame house, of which there were very few around, and moved in it, 1-18-1900. Most residents lived in dugouts, sod houses, etc. The first year the three school age children went to school in a log cabin vacated by an old colored man. Each family furnished the furniture for their own children. Most just had a simple bench to sit on and kept their books on or under it. James, being a carpenter, made a nice desk and seat combination large enough for the three children to sit together. The following year a sod schoolhouse was built. The roof was made of sod and brush, which proved to be a good place for tarantulas and centipedes to nest, occasionally dropping down on some child and causing quite a commotion. Later a frame schoolhouse was built, all of them down on Trail Creek.
Occasionally, a barrel or box would be received from "back east" (Columbus, Ohio) containing old clothes, etc and which we appreciated and looked forward to. The railhead was Woodward, OK thirty miles away. That is where the grain, etc was hauled (a day to take a wagonload in and the next day to return) and our necessary supplies bought.
On October 20, 1907, Mary Jane was accidentally shot with a shotgun as James was trying to fix the trigger. She died a few hours later. It took six or eight hours for a doctor to arrive.
These farms were part of the old Green Urser ranch. The Vici post office was at first a half dugout a few miles southeast of the present location on the Scrambling farm. Mail was brought over from Cestos ten miles east, by horseback or buggy. Later the small town of Vici was built up on the "flats", about a half-mile south of present location. About 1907 this town was completely swept away by a cyclone. It was rebuilt on the present site, part of which was on Dave Jones's land. The offspring of James J. and Mary is the largest of any totaling 175 (3 adopted)."
