about deaf uk jobs

Deaf UK Jobs was set up in April 1999, to provide an online presence for UK deaf related jobs on the net.

This list will advertise jobs within deaf organisations, social services working with deaf people, Teacher of the Deaf posts, interpreting positions, audiologist jobs etc. In other words the deaf industry. Whilst this list is used as a job search list, it was also established for political purposes, to highlight how large the deaf industry in the UK is. For this reason, it is policy to advertise every single deaf related job, even against the personal convictions of the list owner. Information is power.

At this time, we are not able to provide adverts outside the deaf industry, specifically targeted at d/Deaf people.

How do I post an advert?

The list is entirely free, and to post an advert:

a) Put the text of the advert in the main body of an e mail in plain text. Please don’t use file attachments, or html, as it just creates more work for me.

b) In the subject line of the e mail, please state the job title and where the job is based. For example:
Cleaner – Deafies United, Shetlands
Social Worker – Anyplace Council

c) Send it to deaf-uk-jobs@yahoogroups.com

d) Please don't put at the top of the advert: please distribute this, can you send this etc. It just creates more work for me (I have to go into edit mode) and generally causes me to be grumpy.

You do not need to be a subscriber of Deaf UK Jobs to post an advert. If you want to know if your advert has gone through, I suggest when you send it to the list, you cc or bcc your own e mail address so you receive the mail when it is distributed.

When do job adverts get distributed?

Usually a few times a week. Do not send your advert until it is ready for distribution, as our memories aren't designed to keep track of several people.

When do you remove adverts?

Deaf UK Jobs is an e mailing list, therefore adverts cannot be removed from people's inboxes. The adverts remain on the archives. For this reason, we encourage you to ensure that you advert carries a closing date.

How do I contact the list moderators?

E mail to: deaf-uk-jobs-owner@yahoogroups.com

There is a human the other side of this computer, and answers to the name of Alison or Jen. We do not bite, unless you are rude and treat us like a doormat. As the list is managed entirely voluntarily, we do prefer it if you would help us to assist you. i.e. don't do stupid things like send us PDF documents, as we don't have time to type them out.

You can manage you subscription online at: Deaf UK Jobs and click onto the 'Edit My Membership' in the right column (towards the top). To use this, you need to be logged into your yahoogroups.com account.

You will have a choice of Message Delivery:

Individual emails - Send individual email messages

Special notices - Only send me important update emails from the group moderator
No email - Don't send me email, I'll read the messages at the Web site

Do you only send adverts for a specific area, or job type?

No, sorry, we do not have the resources to deal with this at the moment.

There are 2 ways you can make things easier for yourself:

a) Read the subject lines of e mails, this should give you some indication of where the job is and is base. You can delete the remainder of your e mails without having to open them.

b) Use the 'Search Archive' function at Deaf UK Jobs typing in a keyword into the search box. Please note that you need to be logged in to use this function.

I am an international subscriber, can I work in the UK?

It depends on your own individual circumstances. Check out the Home Office's Immigration & Nationality Directorate for more information, and then apply it to your own individual circumstances.

Can I post my CV and looking for work details to the list?

No sorry. DUKJ has over 5,000 subscribers and to say yes to one person, would mean we would have to say yes to everyone. Imagine 5,000+ seeking work e mails. It would certainly drive us up the pole, and probably other people too.

How do I create a yahoogroups.com username and password, so that I can log in?

Surf to Yahoogroups and in the left column, you will see:

New users - Click here to register

Click onto it, and you then need to follow the 'Sign up for your Yahoo! ID' process. Once you have done this, you will need to link your Yahoo! ID with your e mail addresses, you are subscribed to. This can be done for multiple addresses. If you do not link your addresses, you will not be able to see the groups you are subscribed to, when you sign in. If you cannot see any indication at this stage, on how to do this, you can do this later.

Once you have created your Yahoo! ID and password, you can sign in. If you are not prompted, go to Yahoogroups to do this.

After signing in, click onto 'My Groups', at the top right hand of the page. This should then list all the groups you are subscribed to. If all your groups are not shown, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click onto 'Don't see all your groups?', then follow all the steps for 'Find My Memberships'.

How do I contact the list moderators?

E mail to: deaf-uk-jobs-owner@yahoogroups.com

Rest assured, We are not a computers and our names are Alison or Jen. We generally do not bite, unless you are rude and treat us like a doormat. If you are going on hols, please do me a favour and unsubscribe. We don't particularly enjoy receiving the 1000th message to tell me you are lapping up the sun in heaven and won't be back in the office for a bit. i.e. its rubbing my face in it, whilst we're generally freezing our butts off in the UK.

Oh, by the way, can you try and subscribe / unsubscribe by yourself, as it just creates extra work. If all else fails, we will assist ... but please don't scream at us. Its generally a yahoo problem, and we do not work for them
